Ganesh Chaturthi is the day where the birth of Sri Ganesh is celebrated. On this day Sri Ganesh was resurrected by Lord Shiva by putting an elephant's head and making him the first deity to be worshipped.
Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi is one of the major traditional festivals celebrated by the Hindu community. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, starting on the Shukla chaturthi. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anantha Chaturdashi.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and many other parts of India. The festival is so popular that the preparations begin months in advance. Days before the actual worship, homes are cleaned and marquees erected at street corners to house the idols of the Lord. Elaborate arrangements are made for lighting, decoration, mirrors and flowers. The artisans who make the idols of Ganesh compete with each other to make bigger and better sculptures. The sizes of the relatively larger ones range anywhere from 10 meters to 30 meters in height. The story of Ganesh Chaturthi is read on the festival day and avoid seeing moon.
Celebrations in Maharashtra:
In Maharashtra, the festival is usually a public event, but many celebrate at their houses as a family event. In 1893, Lokamanya Tilak insisted to celebrate this festival as a public event to reduce the gap between different community people and fight against the British rule.
During Puja, all things favorite to Lord Ganesh are offered. One of them is his favorite flower-the red Hibiscus and garike, a must-have in all Ganpati Aartis and Sthapanas.

Celebrations in Karnataka:
In Karnataka this festival is commonly known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, in different ritualistic ways. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by offering prayers to Gauri, the mother of the Lord Ganesh, known as Swarna Gowri vrata. The married women offer their prayers to Gauri to please and seek her blessings, so that their married life remain long lasting and contented. This festival is celebrated in different temples of Karnataka, where Lord Ganesh is worshipped along with his mother Gauri. On the occasion of Gowri festivals baaginas are offered to the sumangalies.
The first day is Swarna Gowri Vrata and the next day (sometimes both fall on the same day) it is believed that Lord Ganesh comes home to take his mother. Usually both Gowri and Ganesh idols are kept either 3, 5 or 10 days and then immersed in rivers or lakes.
Delicacies prepared on Gowri festival are, chitranna (colored rice), ambode (fried cutlet), payasa (indian pudding), kayi hoolige (coconut and jiggery stuffed indian bread), kosambari and palya (salad and vegetables), kayi kadubu (coconut stuffed baked may be called as momos), tavve, saru/huli (dal, rasam,sambar) and relished with everyone at home.
Delicacies prepared on Ganesh festival are, chitranna (colored rice), ambode (fried cutlet), payasa (indian pudding), modaka (coconut and jiggery stuffed deep fried), kosambari and palya (salad and vegetables), kadubu (coconut and jagery stuffed deep fried), tavve, saru/huli (dal, rasam, sambar) and relished with everyone at home. Along with this snacks like chakkuli, koodubale and many others are prepared and shared with neighbors and friends.
Celebrations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana:
In Andhra and Telangana itтАЩs a family event. Ganesh idol is bought home and a turmeric Ganesh is prepared at home. All the offerings first will be done to the turmeric Ganesh and then to the idol bought.
The idol is kept on banana leaf and rice. Decorated with flowers and leaves. Visarjana is done usually on the same day or 3rd or 5th day.
Delicacies prepared are undrum (with rava, channa dal and cashew nut), bobbattu and Puliyogare (tamarind rice) is prepared and relished with the family.
Celebrations in Tamil Nadu:
In Tamil Nadu also the Ganesh Chaturthi or Pillayar Chaturthi is a family event. The day is marked by colorful celebrations and special home-made sweets and foods are an important part of the festival.
Usually they observe fast all day and break the fast only in the night. In many places idols are made of coconuts and other organic products.
Delicacies prepared are Modhagam,Thengaai Poorna Kozhukattai, Paal Kozhukatta, Urdal Poorna Kozhukattai, Paruppu Payasam with Coconut Milk.
